But his efforts were in vain and he began to calmly walk off.
However, cops in a passing police car – with its blues and twos on – spotted him.
It pulled over outside the branch of Aldi, on Edgware Road, Lisson Grove, north London.
Two officers climbed out of the marked force car and then gave chase.
The suspect then ran down Orchardson Street as the video came to an end.
An onlooker who witnessed the attempted theft joked: “Feds are coming mate.
“Run, police are coming.
“You’re gonna get nicked.”
As the cops pursued him he dashed around a corner by the supermarket.
The witness added in the 27-second video: “He’s running, he’s running, he’s running.
“Catch him, he’s off, catch him.”
It happened on Monday (16 Dec) morning, as reported by Need To Know.
Local Charlene said: “Initially I thought the police were on their way to lunch.
“Can’t believe they got involved and chased.”
Another – named Steve – said: “Surprised the police came, must have been just around the corner.”
Andrew Duncan joked: “Is that a first?”
Remiel Monroe added: “Oh my God.
“Actual police work, fair play.”
The Met Police has been approached for comment.
