A woman who married a man 34 years her senior says that strangers sometimes mistake her husband for her father and even accuse her of being a “gold digger” – but they don’t let it ruin their love.

Gracen Geagan preferred to date men her own age until she met husband, Kevin Geagan, 60, four years ago.

But their unconventional age gap hasn’t come without it’s challenges, and the 26-year-old says strangers often assume he is her parent when they are out and about.

And their love story has garnered its fair share of negative attention on social media, too.

“We’ve heard just about everything imaginable,” Gracen, from South Carolina, US, told Need To Know – Your daily pulse on what’s trending, creating, and moving the needle .

“We see thousands of variations of the same assumptions – that Kevin is old enough to be my grandfather, that I must be a gold digger, or that our relationship has an expiration date because of our ages.

“They’re really just surface-level judgments from people who don’t know us, so we don’t spend much time dwelling on them.

“Kevin and I often remind each other of an old saying we’ve adopted, ‘praise and blame, all the same’.

“We try not to build our identities on the opinions of strangers, whether they’re praising us or criticising us.

“Both can become distractions if you allow them to define you.

“Our identities are built from the inside out, not the outside in.

“But honestly, the comments that bother me least are the ones from strangers.

“They don’t know us.

“I understand that people make assumptions based on a short video.

“What matters far more is the people who actually know us.”

Meanwhile, in person, they are even mistaken for family members.

Gracen explained: “When we were checking into a hotel, the person at the front desk casually assumed Kevin was my father.

“Another time, someone at a restaurant asked if we were celebrating a father-daughter outing.

“Those moments are usually a little awkward for everyone involved, but once we explain that we’re actually husband and wife, people are almost always embarrassed and apologise.

“We never take it personally because they’re making an assumption based on appearances, not on knowing us.

“Sometimes people stare.

“I think it’s human nature when something is unexpected.

“We don’t react because we’ve learned that curiosity isn’t necessarily judgment.

“Most people move on within a few seconds.”

The couple first met while Gracen was managing a high-end steakhouse where Kevin was a regular customer.

Gracen, who now owns a charcuterie business, said: “Over time, we developed a genuine friendship through countless conversations at the restaurant.

“Eventually, he asked if I’d like to grab a morning coffee, which was the first time we had seen each other outside of work.

“What started as a friendship gradually became something much deeper, and we officially began dating that summer.

“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think about the age gap.

“It wasn’t something I had ever imagined for my life, and I understood that other people would naturally have questions too.

“But as our friendship grew, I realised I wasn’t choosing an age, I was choosing a person.

“The more I got to know Kevin, the less the number mattered and the more his character did.

“He’s one of the most intentional people I’ve ever met.

“He listens, he keeps his word, he makes me feel emotionally safe, and he consistently puts my needs ahead of his own.

“I always say that I didn’t fall in love with an age, I fell in love with a man whose faith, kindness, integrity, generosity, and sense of humour made me want to spend my life with him.

“For me, the biggest difference in dating an older man has been the emotional security of our relationship.

“We communicate well, we genuinely enjoy each other’s company, and we don’t play games with one another.

“That’s not because Kevin is older, it’s because of who he is.

“I think people sometimes assume our relationship works because of the age gap, when in reality it works because of the qualities we both bring into the marriage.

“There was one moment I’ll never forget where we realised we wanted to marry each other.

“We were having dinner with a close friend who had quietly suspected for months that Kevin and I were more than just friends.

“Until then, we hadn’t told anyone we were dating.

“During dinner, Kevin smiled and admitted that our friend had been right all along, we were together and in love.

“The moment he said it out loud, something changed for me.

“My heart leapt, my face lit up, and I remember feeling an overwhelming sense of peace and excitement.

“Looking back, I think that was the night we both realised this wasn’t just a relationship we were enjoying, it was the person we wanted to spend the rest of our lives with.”

Gracen says family and friends were initially surprised by the relationship, but their concerns disappeared once they spent time with them as a couple.

She said: “I think it gave everyone pause at first.

“Both of us are very close with our families and have wonderful groups of friends, so it was only natural that their comfort with our relationship lagged behind ours.

“They simply wanted to be sure it was healthy and genuine.

“Once they spent time around us, they stopped seeing the age gap and started seeing the relationship.

“They saw two people who genuinely enjoy each other’s company, communicate well, laugh constantly, and treat one another with love and respect.

“That changed everything.

“They didn’t accept us overnight.

“Trust takes time, and that’s completely understandable.

“Kevin and I have a philosophy that many negative reactions come from one of two places, protection or projection.

“If someone who genuinely loves you has concerns, that’s usually protection.

“They simply want to know you’re safe, respected, and making a healthy decision.

“That’s exactly where our families were.

“When strangers criticise a relationship they know nothing about, we’ve learned that’s often projection rather than protection.

“Once our family spent time with us and saw how healthy and happy our relationship was, they stopped seeing the age gap and started seeing the relationship.”

Although neither expected to end up in an age-gap relationship, Kevin said they quickly realised they shared the same values and outlook on life.

Kevin, who works in a car dealership, said: “I’d dated women with much smaller age differences in both directions, while Gracen had always dated people around her own age.

“Neither of us set out looking for an age-gap relationship or expecting to get married.

“We understood from the beginning that the age difference would bring questions and plenty of outside opinions.

“But after several months together, we realised we shared something much more important than a birth year.

“We shared the same faith, the same values, the same vision for a relationship, and we genuinely never ran out of things to talk about.

“We understand our relationship isn’t one everyone would choose, and that’s OK.

“But we’ve learned that the qualities that sustain a marriage, faith, character, friendship, trust, and shared values, don’t have an age attached to them.

“Those are the things we chose to build our relationship on, and they’ve given us a marriage that feels incredibly natural to both of us.”

Gracen added: “For me, it isn’t about dating an older man.

“It’s about being with Kevin.

“I love how emotionally secure our relationship feels.

“We communicate well, we laugh constantly, and I always feel supported, protected, and genuinely heard.

“It’s simply the healthiest relationship I’ve ever experienced.

“We laugh constantly, genuinely enjoy spending time together, and never seem to run out of things to talk about.

“People often expect our age gap to create distance, but for us it’s had the opposite effect.

“I’ve never felt more understood or more at peace in a relationship.

“I sometimes forget that there’s an age gap.

“There are moments when someone mentions our ages or we read a comment online and we’re reminded.

“But in everyday life it simply isn’t something we think about – we just feel like husband and wife.”

Kevin surprised Gracen with a whirlwind three-day trip to New York, where he proposed at sunrise in Central Park after performing a song he had written for her on his guitar.

He’d also flown her sister and one of her closest friends so they could spend the day celebrating together.

Looking to the future, the pair say they have decided not to have children and instead want to focus on travelling, spending time with loved ones and building a life together.

Gracen said: “Before getting married, we had many thoughtful conversations about what we wanted our future to look like.

“One of those conversations was about having children, and together we decided that wasn’t the path we wanted to take.

“It was a mutual decision that reflected who we are as a couple, not simply our ages.

“Instead, we’re excited to build a life centred around experiences, travel, our faith, our friendships, our families, and creating meaningful memories together.

“We truly enjoy doing life side-by-side.”

Kevin hopes their story encourages people to look beyond appearances.

He said: “One thing we’ve learned is that people often form opinions based on a headline or a photograph.

“But relationships aren’t built on headlines.

“They’re built on character, trust, friendship, shared values, and showing up for one another every single day.

“If our story encourages people to look a little deeper before judging someone else’s relationship, then sharing our lives has been worthwhile.”

Gracen added: “I’d want to tell anyone in an age gap relationship not to spend their energy trying to convince everyone that your relationship is valid.

“Age gap relationships aren’t for everyone, and we completely understand why some people wouldn’t choose one for themselves.

“When negativity comes from strangers who don’t know you, we’ve learned it often reflects their own experiences, beliefs, or perspective more than it reflects your relationship.

“Most importantly, don’t focus on making the age gap work – focus on making the relationship work.

“Show people a relationship where both people are healthier, happier, kinder, and better because they’re together.

“Over time, the age gap fades into the background, and the relationship becomes what people actually see.

“I’d simply encourage people to look a little deeper.

“We understand that our age gap is unusual, and it’s naturally what catches people’s attention first.

“But we’ve found that the age gap eventually becomes the least interesting thing about the relationship.

“The age gap is the hook. The relationship is the story.

“We’re not creating age-gap content, we’re creating conversations about healthy relationships through the lens of an age-gap marriage.

“People are starving for relationships that feel safe, intentional, and deeply connected.”
