But seconds later, the tough old beast clambered back onto its feet and calmly strolled away.
Bystanders could hardly believe their eyes as the unharmed animal left the tracks as if nothing had happened.
The drama unfolded at the Palia Ataria crossing in Uttar Pradesh, India, where barriers were already down and people waited for the train to pass.
The cow suddenly wandered onto the rails just as the locomotive thundered into view.
The train appeared to clip the animal’s rear with a sickening thump that left onlookers fearing the worst, as reported by Need To Know.
Many locals hailed it as a miracle during the holy month of Sawan, sacred to Lord Shiva.
One person filming the scene declared: “It was due to the grace of Lord Shiva on the first Monday of Sawan that the cow survived such a major accident.”
No injuries to passengers or crew were reported and the train continued on its way after striking the cow.
Animal welfare campaigners have used the footage to highlight the dangers of livestock straying near busy rail lines.
