Story from Jam Press (Niki Lauda Auction) Pictured: The 1984 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16 driven by Niki Lauda. You can own one of two cars left from The Race of Champions – driven by Niki Lauda A race car, once driven by Formula 1 champion Niki Lauda, is now up for auction. The 1984 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16 was one of 21 to be adapted specifically for competitions, with revisions being made to the suspension and exhaust system, as well as including four-piston front brakes, a 4.08-ratio final drive and a bolt-in roll cage. The cars were also fitted with a fire extinguisher, twin racing seats, wider wheels and Pirelli racing tyres. This was all done in preparation for the 12-lap 1984 Race of Champions at the Nürburgring circuit, the largest gathering of past and present F1 champions from across the world. Racers included Alain Prost, Elio de Angelis and Aryton Senna, who claimed the first prize. Three-time F1 winner, Niki Lauda, drove the car at the race, placing second with a time of 26 minutes and 59.16 seconds after staring from grid space 14. 19 of the 21 cars were retrofitted by Mercedes-Benz after the race, giving them original engines and selling them as used road cars. Now, only two of the three remaining cars are in perfect condition, with one remaining in the Mercedes-Benz Museum. In addition, the roof of the car was signed by Niki in 2016. On 15 September, the car will be going up for auction at the Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski in Switzerland. The car is expected to fetch between $455,000 and $569,000.
