An 11-year-old girl had a huge tumour removed from her abdomen after her parents thought she was pregnant.

The youngster, named Sharley, was admitted to the hospital with severe abdominal pain and breathing problems.

Doctors subsequently removed a giant teratoma tumour that measured 35x25cm and weighed over 7.7 lbs (3.5kg).

The team of specialists, led by Dr Miguel Ángel Gallegos Cajo, said the tumour gave the impression the girl was 30 weeks pregnant due to its size and shape.

The tumour stretched from the patient’s lungs to her belly.

The operation took place at the National Institute of Children’s Health in the Peruvian capital Lima on 19 March.

Specialists first carried out an exploratory laparotomy where the abdomen is opened to examine the organs for injury or disease.

Dr Gallegos said: “The tumour grew over a period of two years, causing the patient severe pain.”

He explained that there was a risk of the tumour twisting, which would have caused more pain and abdominal cramps.

There was also the possibility that it could rupture and trigger an internal bleeding issue, as reported by Need To Know.

The girl’s father Esdras Urupeque said: “We never imagined that her belly was growing due to the presence of a tumour.

“Thank God the doctors detected it in time.

“Everything went well and they successfully removed the tumour.”
