Tesco have added security tags on bottles of olive oil and balsamic vinegar to prevent shoplifting.

Supermarkets have come under fire due to the rising price of olive oil.

Bottles of oil now cost up to £15.50 in Tesco, with their own brand costing £11.50 reports Need To Know.

They have been fitted with security tags to deter thieves from the pricey pantry item.

But in their latest move to ward off shoplifters, the supermarket has fitted large security tags to bottles of balsamic vinegar.

Tesco Express in Manchester’s Market Street sells various bottles of balsamic vinegar.

Tesco’s own brand Balsamic costs a staggering £8.30 for a 250ml bottle.

However, it is not the most expensive one on the shelf.

A 250ml bottle of ‘Belazu’ balsamic vinegar costs an eye-watering £16.50.

It has been fitted with a large security tag that needs to be removed by staff at the till after the item has been purchased.

On the shelves bottles of Tesco’s own olive oils, along with other brands, have been fitted with security tags.

Shoppers were left furious at the prices.

Jennifer Vaudrey said: “When did you start needing a mortgage to buy olive oil?”

Paul Clark-Wright fumed: “Tesco, I’m absolutely floored at the price of olive oil.”

One, called Ricardo said: “I wonder if going back to square one will take us to a place where olive oil isn’t security-tagged?”

Tesco has been approached for comment.
