Over 240 flights have been cancelled after hailstones the size of golf balls battered a major airport.

Images show huge hailstones bouncing on a runway and causing a leak in a ceiling inside a terminal building.

One shocked passenger is heard saying: “It’s raining, it broke through the ceiling, oh my god.”

A ceiling tile can be seen crashing to the floor as the camerawoman says: “We gotta go, we gotta go.”

The hailstorm affected services at Calgary International Airport, in Canada, earlier this week.

The storm reportedly caused the cancellation of 84 flights on Wednesday, 106 on Tuesday, and 58 on Monday.

Canada’s second largest airline WestJet said they had to pull 16 planes from their fleet due to storm damage.

Airline president, Diederik Pen, said on Wednesday: “All of us at WestJet are incredibly disappointed to be disrupting the travel plans of our valued guests again this summer.

“We greatly appreciate your patience and understanding over the coming days as we weather the impact following this significant storm.

“We recognise that while this storm impacted our operation, many of our people and our guests suffered damage to their personal property as well.”

He added: “For those of you who are faced with this directly, we understand that these are challenging times, and we hope you are doing well.”

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) said the storm developed over southern Alberta on the afternoon of August 5.

It then moved eastwards over the following days, producing devastating amounts of hail, wind and heavy rain, as reported by Need To Know.

The ECCC said they received multiple reports of hailstones the size of eggs causing damage in built-up areas.
