The late Aston Villa legend, Gary Shaw, left just £287,000 to his family – less than a week’s wages for new loan signing Marcus Rashford.

The 1982 European Cup winner died, aged 63, after banging his head while getting out of a taxi.

Shaw never married or had children and hadn’t written a will.

Legal documents released on Monday (10 Feb), said that as a result, a Grant of Letters of Administration was issued.

This is when “a person has died without making a valid will” called Intestate and is issued an administrator of the estate.

“This is usually the lawful spouse if any, or nearest blood relative.”

This revealed the gross value of his estate was £297,670 reduced to a net value of £287,027.

It is less than the weekly wage of Villa’s next January loan signing Rashford, 27,

The club are reportedly paying £225,000-a-week of it and parent club Man Utd covering the rest of his £325,000-a-week pay.

The average top flight footballer annual salary during Shaw’s heyday was about £57,000-a-year – or £1,096-a-week.

The striker played for the Villains between 1978 and 1988

He had been out with friends last September.

His inquest in December heard he was put in a taxi by friends at around 1.30am.

But as he left the cab he fell and hit his head on a kerb before being found by a neighbour in the early hours.

He died ten days later after suffering a severe head injury.

At the time of his death, Aston Villa paid a moving tribute to him as reported by Need To Know.

The club issued a statement saying: “Aston Villa Football Club is deeply shocked and profoundly saddened to learn that Gary Shaw, one of our European Cup-winning heroes, has passed away.

“Gary was one of our own, a talented striker who delighted supporters with his goalscoring exploits which helped fire Villa to success in the 1980s.

“Individual accolades would also follow for a player who was idolised by many on the terraces.”

He made 213 appearances for his boyhood club scoring 79 goals and was given a free transfer in 1988 playing in Denmark, Austria and Hong Kong before he hung up his boots in 1992.

He is regarded as one of Villa’s best forwards in their 150-year history.

He later returned to the club as a youth team coach.

Shaw never earned a cap for England but did play seven times for the U21s, scoring two goals.
