A firefighter was called to a car crash, only to discover that the sole victim was his own son.
Omar Masia and four friends were returning from a party along a narrow, unpaved road in the early hours of Sunday (26 Oct).
As they drove across an old stone bridge, the car – for reasons still under investigation – swerved.

Instead of a crash barrier, the bridge had rusted, brittle metal tubes along its edge.
The BMW smashed through them, plunged around 10 metres (33 ft), and landed on its roof in a dry riverbed.

Omar, who was in the back seat, was crushed as the roof caved in.
He died instantly.
The other passengers were injured, but the driver and another young man managed to escape.
With no phone signal and no passing cars, they walked to a nearby house to raise the alarm.
Firefighters from Tempio Pausania, Sardinia, were dispatched to the scene, including Massimiliano Masia, Omar’s father.

“But that’s my son,” he reportedly exclaimed as the onboard radio crackled the names of those involved.
Upon arriving along the Baldu-L’Agnata road, Massimiliano recognised some of his son’s friends, as reported by Need To Know.
Moments later, he was informed that Omar, 25, was trapped inside the car.
He could only watch as attempts to revive him proved futile.

The survivors were taken to hospital and are reported to be doing well, with one already discharged.
Omar, from Calangianus, worked as an electrician.
Antonio Giordano of the Sassari Fire Brigade said: “The thought that Massimiliano, who dedicated his life to rushing into danger to save others, was confronted with the most devastating accident – one involving the person he loved most – is a wound beyond comprehension.”
Police are questioning local authorities in Tempio Pausania about the poor condition of the road.
The driver, who tested slightly above the legal alcohol limit, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
