An 18-year-old mum-to-be died along with her unborn baby after being repeatedly sent home from hospital.

Maria Luiza Bogo Lopes was seven months pregnant when she first began feeling unwell on 28 March, her family said.

Two days later, on 30 March, she went to hospital where she was referred to the obstetrics ward.

She was given medication, IV fluids and underwent blood and urine tests – but after results appeared normal, she was sent home.

The following day, 31 March, Maria’s condition worsened and she returned to the same hospital in Indaial, Brazil.

She was again treated with medication and fluids and underwent further tests.

This time, her family said, results showed abnormalities including a low platelet count and changes in her urine.

Doctors suspected she may have dengue – but she was not admitted and was sent home once more.

On 1 April, Maria initially felt better but later developed body aches and a fever.

She returned to A&E, where she was given medication but no tests were carried out.

After a few hours under observation, she was discharged again.

Still unwell on Thursday (2 Apr), Maria visited a local clinic, as reported by Need To Know.

Staff were alarmed by her condition, noting her extreme exhaustion and purple spots across her body.

She was rushed back to hospital, where doctors quickly realised the severity of her illness.

Her family were told she had a serious case of sepsis and that both she and her unborn baby were at risk.

An ICU bed was requested at a hospital in nearby Blumenau, and Maria was transferred by ambulance.

Doctors performed an emergency C-section – but tragically the baby did not survive. Maria died shortly afterwards.

Her devastated family have blamed the Indaial hospital for the tragedy.

Her mother, Luana Bogo Petry, told local media: “I want to know what happened to my daughter.

“She was so healthy, so excited to be a mother, and deeply loved. I won’t let her memory be treated this way.”

Beatriz Ramos Hospital said in a statement: “The case is undergoing a thorough technical investigation.

“We deeply regret what happened and express our solidarity with the family during this time of grief.”
