A bomb scare has erupted after an explosive device was discovered just yards from where pop superstar Shakira is set to perform a huge free concert.

The chilling find has sparked major security fears as more than two million fans are expected to flock to the show.

The suspicious object was spotted on Rio de Janeiro’s famous Copacabana promenade – right near the stage being built for the ‘Todo Mundo no Rio’ festival on 2 May.

Elite bomb squad officers rushed to the scene on Monday (13 April) and safely dealt with the device.

It was found close to the construction site in front of the iconic Copacabana Palace hotel.

Specialist units from the CORE bomb squad later confirmed the item was a stun grenade – a non-lethal device designed to disorient with a loud blast and bright flash.

Dramatic images showed a bomb expert in full protective gear removing a black box from the busy boardwalk.

Rio Civil Police said: “Upon arrival, agents followed standard protocols and safely removed the artefact.

“The material has been seized and will undergo forensic analysis.

“Investigations are ongoing to clarify the facts.”

The upcoming concert is part of a series of massive free shows aimed at boosting the city’s economy – following huge gigs by Madonna in 2024 and Lady Gaga last year.

Tourism officials estimate the event could pump around £89million into the local economy, as reported by Need To Know.

Despite the scare, organisers say the show will go ahead as planned.

But fans have been warned to expect tight security, including bag checks and increased police presence.
