A paradise holiday isle loved by Brits is banning new holiday rental properties because they were pushing out local residents.

Authorities have taken the step to increase the housing supply for struggling locals.

Licensed apartment holiday lets have been outlawed there for some years.

But the ban will now apply to other types of property including houses and villas in Palma de Mallorca, off Spain.

Local councillor Óscar Fidalgo said this was a decision which had to be taken.

He said it was proportionate, fair, and it should have been done sooner.

He was critical of holiday rentals increasing ‘like never before’.

And said holiday rentals caused integration issues between tourists and locals, as reported by Need To Know.

Fidalgo said: “The expansion of tourist accommodation reduces the available residential supply and makes it harder to access housing.

“The current model presents problems of legal certainty and complicates inspections, which allows for fraud.

“More inspection capacity is needed.

“There are also urban sustainability reasons.
“It affects neighbourhood coexistence.

“We must protect neighbourhoods and prevent the displacement of residents.”

The amendment is based on a town hall technical report which concluded that Palma is unsuitable for the opening of new holiday rental properties.

Another holiday isle has also tightened up its regulations by banning nearly 700 loungers.

Authorities imposed the ban on Formentera in the Balearics from now until 2029.

They also ordered the removal of 339 parasols from beaches.

The move came after a resolution by the Spanish Government’s Directorate-General for Coasts and the Coastline Directorate-General for Coasts and the Coastline regarding temporary installations between 2026 to 2029.
