Thousands of sweaty commuters were left stranded at Euston Station as a scorching 37C heatwave caused disruption to train services.

Workers travelling through the capital faced yet another headache after soaring temperatures forced rail bosses to introduce a reduced timetable at one of Britain’s busiest stations.

Huge crowds were seen crammed into the concourse and staring up at departure boards during rush hour on 23 June, as reported by Need To Know.

It marked the first day of a reduced timetable for services in and out of London Euston, with the disruption set to remain in place until 25 June.

The severe heatwave is expected to peak over the coming days, with temperatures threatening to break June’s all-time daily record.

Despite more than 117,000 passengers typically passing through the station on an average weekday, travellers have been urged to make journeys only if “absolutely necessary”.

The decision to reduce services was taken by Network Rail after the Met Office issued a rare red warning for extreme heat.

Trains are operating at reduced speeds, while timetables have been adjusted to cope with the conditions.

Passengers have been warned that journeys could take longer and face a greater risk of delays and cancellations.

Gary Walsh, Director for Network Rail’s West Coast South route, said: “With weather warnings in place across the country for extreme hot weather, services in and out of London Euston will be reduced this week.

“We strongly advise customers to plan ahead, check their journeys, and only travel if absolutely necessary on the hottest days.

“If you do need to travel, please allow extra time and carry water to stay cool.

“We’re working closely with our train operator partners to protect the reliability of the railway during the extreme heat.

“This includes running trains at slower speeds at some locations to keep people and our infrastructure safe.”

To help passengers cope with the sweltering conditions, London Euston has installed two new free water fountains.

The fountains are located near the entrance to platforms one to three.
