Have you ever gotten in someone’s car and been hit with mould or an unpleasant odour? It is not a nice experience, and often, this is a result of the air conditioning system. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to prevent this issue and ensure a fresh smell and feel inside your own car.

Regular Maintenance & Cleaning

The best defence against mould and unpleasant odours from the air conditioning system is regular maintenance and cleaning. Dust and debris can accumulate over time, which can lead to mould. To prevent this, turn off the power to the AC, remove the filters, clean/replace them, and replace. You should also wipe down the coils and other parts to remove debris.

Use Air Con Wisely

You should also be sensible with the use of your air con system. Try to avoid running the air conditioning recirculate mode for too long as this can trap moisture and promote the growth of mould. Instead, the fresh air mode is helpful for healthy circulation. If the weather is humid, try to air the car out after using the air con to reduce moisture levels.

Employ Dehumidifiers & Anti-Bac Sprays

Leading on from this, dehumidifiers are an excellent way to reduce moisture levels in the car. Moisture levels can get high when you use the air-con system and in humid conditions, so placing a dehumidifier in the car overnight will help to  dry it out. Ant-bacterial sprays, meanwhile, can remove odours by killing bacteria and fungi – this will also help to create a healthier environment. Be sure to spray the air con vents and filters as these are where issues often arise.

Professional Air Conditioning Servicing

Finally, it is important to get professional air conditioning servicing from a specialist who can carry out a full car service. This is important because they will be able to make sure that your air conditioning system is working properly and carry out a thorough cleaning of internal components, and perform basic repairs to ensure that the system is working in optimum condition and prevent the growth of mould.

There is nothing worse than bad odours inside your car, especially if you regularly give people lifts, as this can be embarrassing. Often, this is a result of the air conditioning system. The above are a few of the best ways to prevent mould and bad odours emanating from your air conditioning system and keep your car fresh and welcoming.
