Maya Jama and Stormzy have parted ways “for the final time,” according to friends, who say Maya isn’t ready to settle down yet. The Love Island host, 29, and the rapper, 30, shared the news of their breakup in a joint statement yesterday.
The couple, last seen together at the British Grand Prix on July 5, decided to end their relationship privately last week. They had also attended Glastonbury on June 28.
A source close to the couple mentioned that Maya enjoys being social and going out, while Stormzy, whose real name is Michael Owuo, prefers staying home.

“They’re in different places in their lives,” the source explained. “Michael wants to settle down, but Maya is focused on her career. They respect each other too much to force anything and decided to end things so they wouldn’t waste each other’s time.”
The pair confirmed their breakup on Instagram, expressing mutual respect and gratitude for their time together. In their statement, believed to be written by Maya and signed by both, they said, “We still think the world of each other and are still friends.”
Reflecting on their relationship, which began in 2014, they shared, “We fell in love when we were young and have spent years growing together and apart. We gave it another shot in August 2023, but it didn’t work out, and that’s okay.”
Maya has since traveled to Ibiza with close friends who are supporting her. Meanwhile, Stormzy is scheduled to perform at Gurtenfestival in Switzerland. The breakup has reportedly surprised some friends, as Maya had been helping Stormzy with his new album. They informed their wider circle just before making the public announcement.
Last year, in an interview with Louis Theroux, Stormzy revealed he had bought a large house to raise a family in. He also expressed his aspirations to be a better man, become a father, and serve others. His song “Lessons” from 2019 reflects his regret over their previous split, with lyrics about wanting children with Maya.
Maya, originally from Bristol, ended the relationship just before her 30th birthday on August 14. A source close to her mentioned that she’s becoming more aware of time passing and wants to focus on her career and enjoy life.
On set of Love Island in Majorca, Maya continued working as usual before heading to Ibiza. Her friends, including stylist Rhea Francois and hairdresser Joseph O’Kelly, are with her in a luxury villa.
Stormzy’s mother, Abigail, is reportedly upset by the breakup, having grown close to Maya over the years. Another source added that their relationship struggles became apparent during counseling, where they realized their arguments stemmed from being on different life paths.
Signs of trouble had emerged earlier when Stormzy didn’t follow through on plans to visit Maya in Majorca, and she traveled to work in Paris without him. On Love Island, Maya had shared her own recoupling story, noting that sometimes timing just isn’t right, even if feelings remain.
Maya previously had a brief engagement with Australian basketball player Ben Simmons and a short fling with actor Leonardo DiCaprio after her initial split with Stormzy.
