In a video, the eyewitness warned other travellers: “Do not ever leave money, credit cards, anything important in the overhead lockers.
“We just witnessed daylight robbery on our flight from Malaysia to Vietnam.”
He explained that he was sitting in the second row of the plane when he saw the suspect approach the front on two separate occasions.
The travel worker claimed the suspect “took down a bag from the front-row locker and brought it back after a while.”
He added: “Later, three front-row passengers found out that their cash and credit cards had been stolen.
“And guess what we found later too, partial amounts of money wrapped in socks thrown into deep parts of the locker.”
He said they caught the man “sneakily coming out of the plane” after landing.
The suspect was placed under arrest and the eyewitnesses were “taken to the interrogation room in the airport in Saigon”.
The LFG travellers filled in a witness statement report and were informed that the suspect usually operates in a team of four.
One of them said the alleged criminal gang “always flew one-day transit flights all around the world, basically stealing people’s money all day”.
An AirAsia spokesperson confirmed the incident and said it was reported to the airport authorities upon arrival in Vietnam.
They added: “Our cabin crew is well-trained to handle security incidents and remains vigilant in monitoring guest behaviour.
“We also advise guests on board to safeguard their valuables and report any suspicious activities to the cabin crew immediately.”
The video went viral on TikTok with 254,000 views and hundreds of comments, as reported on Need To Know.
One traveller said: “I always hug all my money while I’m on the plane.”
Another suggested: “Ladies, take your handbag with you every time you go to the washroom or leave your seat. Don’t leave it unattended in front of your seat/under your seat or in the overhead bin.”
Ginger commented: “It happened to me from Vietnam to Hong Kong, I lost a few thousand dollars.”
The LFG travel company was founded by Darryl Han, Shi Hong and Yu Ko.
They were three students from Singapore with “diverse backgrounds and united by their passion for travel”.
