But before he could move it out of the way, another driver hurtled into the crash.
And as he was catapulted over his handlebars, a third racer followed suit.
Just when it would seem the situation couldn’t get any worse, a fourth biker entered the fray and both he and his bike were sent tumbling down the track.
The horror unfolded at the Enduro de Invierno competition in Mar del Plata, Argentina, on Saturday (31 Aug).
A spokesperson for the competition, Pedro Varela, told local media: “It was a typical racing situation. This is a pre-world championship sand race.
“The video is really dramatic. I saw it and thought, ‘wow’. But it’s just part of racing.”
According to Mr Varela, one racer sustained a fractured foot and another suffered a broken collarbone.
A third rider was knocked unconscious by the impact but “is fine now”.
All three received hospital treatment, as reported by Need To Know.
Varela added: “The weather conditions were right, and the track was in perfect shape.
“The riders have top-quality helmets and protective gear, everything is taken care of.
“What might look terrible, like the collisions, are just part of racing.”
