Whether you’re looking to experience the majesty of the Taj Mahal or spiritually immerse yourself along the Ganges, India offers something for every traveller. For your first visit, strike a balance between exploration, culture and relaxation. Below are must-see destinations that provide a comprehensive introduction to India’s vast offerings.

The Golden Triangle: a classic introduction to India

If you’re a first-time visitor, escorted tours to India’s Golden Triangle – Delhi, Agra and Jaipur – are the perfect introduction to the country’s rich history and cultural tapestry. 

Start in Delhi, the capital, where bustling Old Delhi offers a peek into India’s past, with landmarks such as the Red Fort and Jama Masjid. By contrast, New Delhi’s wide avenues and more modern buildings, including India Gate, highlight the country’s colonial and post-independence eras.

A visit to India wouldn’t be complete without seeing the Taj Mahal on the banks of the Yamuna river in Agra. This 17th-century ivory-white marble mausoleum is a stunning symbol of undying love, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of the World. While in Agra, also explore the impressive Agra Fort and the nearby town of Fatehpur Sikri, another Mughal architectural marvel.

Known as the ‘Pink City’, Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, offers royal palaces, stunning forts and vibrant markets. The Amber Fort, a great example of Rajput architecture, and Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds) provide excellent insights into India’s royal history.

The tranquil backwaters of Kerala: a slice of serenity

Known for its network of rivers, canals and lagoons, the Kerala region is best explored by boat. Staying on a traditional houseboat, you’ll float past paddy fields and small villages, and witness the tranquillity of rural life. 

The cities of Kochi and Alleppey are starting points for backwater exploration. Kochi, with its colonial-era architecture and Chinese fishing nets, is a vibrant port city, while Alleppey is known for its backwater cruises and houseboats.

Kerala is also famous for healing Ayurvedic treatments. Many tourists come here to rejuvenate at wellness retreats that offer therapeutic massages and holistic treatments.

The cultural hub of Varanasi: spirituality on the Ganges

The holy city of Varanasi draws pilgrims and tourists alike, making it a city where spirituality and everyday life are intertwined. A sunrise boat ride on the Ganges is a must-do, offering a unique perspective on the city’s sacred rituals. As the sun rises, you’ll witness devotees bathing in the holy river and performing morning prayers. In the evening, attend the Ganga Aarti, a captivating ceremony of fire and chants performed on the ghats. 

The metropolis of Mumbai: a city of dreams

For a glimpse of modern India, Mumbai is an unmissable destination. This bustling metropolis is home to Bollywood, financial institutions and a melting pot of cultures.

The 100-year-old Gateway of India, built to commemorate the 1911 visit of King George V, sits on the waterfront and from here, you can take a boat ride to Elephanta Island, known for its ancient cave temples.

Take a walk along Marine Drive at sunset for a view of Mumbai’s skyline, and explore the historic Colaba district, where British-era buildings, street vendors and trendy cafes coexist.

Like many Indian cities, Mumbai is famed for street food, offering delicacies such as vada pav (soft buns stuffed with fried potato) and bhel puri (savoury puffed rice and noodles). For a taste of Bollywood glamour, catch a movie in one of the city’s iconic cinemas or take a tour of Film City.
