A doctor has revealed how drinking coffee could see you live longer – but only if you do it in the morning.

Cardiologist Aurelio Rojas discussed the popular beverage in a video shared with his 402,000 Instagram followers.

His advice followed a study in the European Heart Journal, which suggests that drinking coffee has fantastic health benefits – but only if done before midday.

The 35-year-old doctor said, “People who drink coffee only in the morning have a longer life expectancy and are less likely to suffer a heart attack.

“This is the main conclusion of a study comparing over 20,000 people who drank coffee for over 20 years.

“This could be explained by the fact that drinking coffee in the afternoon seems to disrupt our circadian rhythm and the secretion of hormones that regulate our rest, such as melatonin or cortisol, thereby increasing our stress levels.

“So yes, enjoy your coffee first thing in the morning, and by the way, decaffeinated also works.”

The study also reported that drinking coffee in the morning could reduce the risk of death from cardiovascular diseases by up to 31%.

It could also reduce the risk of premature death by 17%, as reported by Need To Know.

However, these benefits disappear if coffee is consumed past noon.

Rojas, who is based in Málaga, Spain, added: “Let’s remember that coffee has shown beneficial effects on the heart, such as reducing the risk of diabetes, improving weight loss, and enhancing cardiovascular health thanks to its powerful antioxidant effect.

“It’s also important that our coffee is naturally roasted, never torrefacto [a method where sugar is added to the beans] or a blend.”

Experts recommend limiting intake to two or three cups per morning, depending on your caffeine tolerance.
