According to people who live in homes close to the river, the crocodile is known to walk freely through the area on a regular basis.
Residents have been left heartbroken by the shocking event and attack was reported to the authorities immediately, as reported by Need To Know.
It is not known whether the dog was kept as a pet.
Locals have said that several stray dogs are known to roam around near the canal.
But the event, which occurred on Tuesday (29 April) has left people fearful for their community.
According to local press, this is not the first time an incident has been recorded in the area.
Just weeks ago, firefighters captured a crocodile which was almost two metres in length.
The crocodile was found on land next to the same canal, which is in the Candelario Garza neighbourhood, in Ciudad Madero, a coastal city in the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico.
To avoid risks to residents, the crocodile was taken to a body of water in Altamira, a city in the same state just under 15 miles away.
