Moving Big Furniture Around: Some Dos And Don’ts

Moving big pieces of furniture around can be a hassle (not to mention complicated). But it is the sort of thing that comes up from time to time, especially if you move around a lot or need to manage a business.

That’s where this post can help. We look at some dos and don’ts you should apply if you’re moving around so you know what to do next time you take on a challenge like this.

Do Plan Ahead

You’ll want to start by planning ahead and having a good think about how you’re going to move the furniture. Most people start by measuring door entrances and hallways to check that they have enough space, especially when turning large bits of furniture.

Don’t Rush

It’s also important to avoid rushing moving furniture and equipment. You want to take as much time as you need. Rushing is often a false economy, since furniture is usually worth far more than a few extra minutes.

Do Use Proper Tools

At the same time, you also want to ensure that you use proper tools. Sites like Evo Supplies provide things like sliders and furniture dollies to make it easier to move items around. Using brute force is essential in some circumstances, but tools will make your life so much easier, especially if you plan on moving multiple items

Don’t Ignore Weight Distribution

When moving large pieces of furniture, think about the weight distribution. If you don’t, items could topple over when you least expect it.

The weight distribution can sometimes be top-heavy, which is why it is a good idea to lay items flat when possible. If you can’t do that, putting them on their side will also work.

Do Protect Your Floors

When moving heavy furniture, floors are often at risk. Therefore, you’ll want to protect them as much as possible. Scuffing them is something you need to avoid.

The best way to avoid damage is to use moving blankets and bubble wrap. These prevent sharp edges from grating against each other. You can also avoid scuffing the walls or causing dents.

Don’t Skip Corner Padding

Most movers also recommend against leaving furniture corners exposed. Ideally, you want to pad them so they don’t chip or damage anything else in the environment. Doing this work takes time, but can be made easier if you have the right supplies.

Do Lift Smart

You also want to lift smart when moving furniture around. Injuring yourself isn’t fun and could leave you out of action for several weeks.

You’ll want to start by getting at least two people to help you with large items. The more of you that you have working together, the better. Also, if you have a bad back, use your legs to do the lifting. It’s more work, but it can reduce the risk of injury.

Don’t Force It

Finally, don’t force furniture when moving it around. Avoid shoving it through doorways. Instead, angle and pivot it where necessary, and take your time.
