Mass flooding has forced drivers to brave roads that have been completely swallowed by floodwater after torrential rain battered parts of northern Australia.

Shocking footage shows mindful motorists carefully wading through the submerged streets.

Emily Organ was stuck at a red light on a one-way road when a flash flood left her panicking at the wheel.

The university student shared a clip online that racked up a whopping 463,600 views and over 60,000 likes.

“Our lives were at risk,” Emily, from Gladstone, Queensland, told Need To Know.

“I was scared, I had me and my friends in the car.

“Navigating through water was a very locked-in moment, so all my focus was on the road and going slow.

“I had two choices, either stay in the flash flood until the light turns green and move with traffic or try to get out of there by crashing into another car.”

Emily is just one of the many drivers impacted by the major flooding in Northern Australia.

The region has been hit with a devastating amount of rain with river levels rising and flash floods causing plenty of problems.

The student was stuck in rush hour traffic when the flood hit on 9 Mar.

The poor visibility left her panicking at the wheel with no idea how to handle the situation.

Emily said: “I have never experienced this before.

“For next time, from the help of some people online, I am to turn on my safety hazard lights and wait until people can let me conduct an illegal U-turn when safe to do so and change route or pull over until rain has stopped in a safe place.”

Fortunately, the driver and her friends managed to leave the situation unharmed with her Suzuki Swift still in working order.

Viewers were left shocked by the footage.

One person said: “Brother use a boat.”
