A tourist has been handcuffed in Bali after allegedly boasting online about breaking the island’s strict Day of Silence rules.

The man, believed to be from Switzerland, was filmed being surrounded by officials before being detained and bundled into a vehicle.

His arrest came after he shared a string of social media clips appearing to mock Nyepi Day, a sacred Hindu celebration observed across Bali.

Nyepi, known as the “Day of Silence”, sees the entire island shut down for 24 hours each year.

During this time, everyone is required to stay indoors, with travel, noise and most activities strictly banned.

Only emergency services are allowed to operate.

In videos posted online, the tourist claimed he had gone outside despite the restrictions, as reported by Need To Know.

In one clip, he described the island as “peaceful” while appearing to stroll through empty streets.

In another, he used explicit language to criticise the rules.

He also claimed he had made it to the beach without being caught, describing Bali as completely deserted.

Following the backlash, Balinese senator Niluh Djelantik said the man later turned himself in.

In a video shared online, she confronted him over his actions.

She told him he had disrespected local customs and warned that Bali was not his home, adding that visitors must follow its rules.

The senator also said foreigners who break Nyepi regulations could face serious consequences, including deportation and being banned from returning.

It is not yet clear whether the man has been deported.

Nyepi is one of the most important days in the Balinese calendar.

For 24 hours, the island comes to a complete standstill, with airports closed, businesses shut and streets left empty.

The day is dedicated to reflection, meditation and spiritual cleansing.

In the days leading up to Nyepi, Bali usually hosts large cultural celebrations, including parades featuring giant effigies.

Authorities have repeatedly urged visitors to respect the rules, which apply to everyone on the island regardless of nationality or religion.
