Gladiators icon Gold has died aged 60 after a brave battle with cancer.

Lize van der Walt – one of the show’s most beloved stars – passed away on 19 April, leaving fans devastated.

She shot to fame after joining the hit TV series in 1997, quickly becoming a standout figure during the show’s golden era.

Gold was a firm favourite among viewers, known for her strength, spirit and determination in the Arena.

Her appearances were sadly cut short after an injury forced her to miss the 1998 season.

Lize, originally from South Africa, had been a talented athlete before finding TV fame – excelling in the 400m and relay events.

She was picked from thousands of hopefuls to become a Gladiator.

In 2000, she returned to the Arena in a special showdown – representing the UK against her home nation.

After leaving the show, Lize moved back to Hermanus, South Africa, where she discovered a new passion for painting.

She went on to impress fans around the world with her seascapes and semi-abstract artwork inspired by the coast.

She is survived by her son, Michael, as reported by Need To Know.

A Gladiators spokesperson said: “We’re deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Gladiators’ golden girl, Gold.

“Lize joined the UK Gladiators in 1997, bringing strength, spirit and determination to the Arena.

“Chosen from thousands of applicants to become one of the show’s new Gladiators, she quickly made her mark.

“Although injury limited her appearances, she showed incredible resilience and when she did compete, she proved that all that glistens truly was Gold.

“Our thoughts are with her son Michael, her family, friends and all who knew and loved her.

“Thank you for the memories, Lize. You will always be part of Gladiators history.”
