A 33-year-old tourist was crushed to death after getting caught in a vicious fight between two elephants.

Horror footage shows the woman trapped beneath the front legs of one of the tuskers, which was on its side in a river.

Her husband managed to get away in the nick of time with their baby daughter in his arms, but was powerless to help his wife.

A trainer sitting atop the stronger elephant appeared unable to stop it from attacking its weaker rival.

Tulasi had travelled from Chennai, India, with her husband and daughter for a two-day holiday, as reported by Need To Know.

She was watching the animals being washed at the Dubare Elephant Camp in Coorg on Monday (18 May) when the fight broke out without warning.

She had been standing nearby when one elephant suddenly charged, knocking the other to the ground and trapping her in the chaos.

By the time trainers managed to bring the animals under control, Tulasi had died from trampling injuries.

The weaker elephant, a 34-year-old named Marthanda, also died yesterday (19 May) morning despite receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the clash.

The incident has prompted authorities to recommend a minimum 100ft distance between tourists and animals at elephant camps.

This means visitors will no longer be allowed to pose for photos with elephants or feed them.

Experts warn that even trained animals can display unpredictable behaviour.
