A 46-year-old lawyer has died after the 4×4 she was travelling in overturned during a dream safari.
Meire Aparecida de Amorim was in a Toyota Land Cruiser with five other foreign passengers at around midday on Friday (29 May).
According to her brother, the driveshaft came loose and became lodged in the ground, causing the driver to lose control and swerve.
Meire – originally from Presidente Olegário, Brazil – suffered multiple injuries in the subsequent rollover.
She died at the scene on Namibia’s C14 gravel road, between Sesriem and Walvis Bay, around 110km (68 miles) from the latter, their final destination.
The other occupants sustained “minor to moderate” injuries and were taken to a private hospital in Walvis Bay for treatment.
Meire was a lawyer for the financial services company Caixa Econômica Federal and lived in Brasília.
Her family is now handling arrangements to repatriate her body to Brazil, where she will be laid to rest in her hometown.
Meire was passionate about travel and had been on a long-awaited trip to Africa, as reported by Need To Know.
Her visit to Namibia reportedly included a safari and tours of some of the country’s best-known landscapes.
One friend paid tribute, writing: “I don’t know how to accept that someone so special has gone so soon.
“The world will never be as enchanting and magical without you.”
The Windhoek-based tour company Chameleon Safaris said in a statement: “We regret to confirm that the incident resulted in a fatality.
“Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the family, friends and loved ones affected during this difficult time.”
