Four people have died – three of them from asphyxiation – during celebrations following Mexico’s 2–0 victory over Ecuador in the World Cup Round of 32.

Shocking footage shows a huge crush on Mexico City’s Paseo de la Reforma on Tuesday (30 June) night.

One clip shows an injured reveller lying on the ground, separated from the crowd by riot police carrying shields.

Authorities identified the three asphyxiation victims as two women, aged 48 and 19, and a 44-year-old man.

Emergency responders found the 19-year-old woman and the man unconscious at a street junction and performed CPR before taking them to hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

The 48-year-old woman was found unconscious on a nearby street in the Juárez neighbourhood. She was also taken to hospital but later died.

A man believed to be around 30, whose identity has not yet been established, was later confirmed as the fourth fatality.

He was “taken to hospital suffering from status epilepticus, seizures and gastrointestinal bleeding”, according to Mexico City Health Secretary Nadine Gasman.

She added: “He suffered a cardiac arrest in hospital and did not respond to advanced resuscitation efforts.”

Tuesday night’s celebrations drew more than 1.4m people onto the streets of the Mexican capital, as reported by Need To Know.

Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada described it as “the largest gathering in the history of our city and probably the entire country”.

According to Gasman, 1,615 people received medical treatment during the match and the ensuing celebrations.

Of those, 28 were taken to hospital with fractures, serious injuries or, in one case, a heart attack.

Mexico City Security Secretary Pablo Vázquez said his department would assist “the investigations being carried out by the competent authorities to determine exactly how these events occurred”.
