A live World War Two shell has been blown up after being found by a beachgoer.

Coastguards were called after a member of the public spotted the suspicious object.

The device, measuring around six inches in diameter, was found at Chalkwell Oaze flats, Southend on Sea, Essex.

It was later destroyed by an Army explosive ordnance disposal team during low tide, as reported by Need To Know

A coastguard spokesperson said: “Throughout the year, HM Coastguard Southend On Sea officers are tasked to locate, assess and assist in the removal of pieces of explosive ordnance from Southend’s beaches.

“We received the call to visit the Chalkwell Oaze flats, approximately 600 metres due south of The Crowstone.

“A member of public had reported a shell-shaped object that required further investigation.

“During our first visit at 7am this morning, we were able to locate the object, take photos and send them to the MRCC operations room, who in turn shared them with our colleagues at Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal, EOD.

“The decision was made by the EOD teams that disposal officers would attend, but given the flooding tide, it would be better suited to return at low tide to properly identify the possible ordnance and take further action.

“Southend Coastguard Rescue Officers returned to the scene and accompanied EOD officers along the causeway to the object.

“It was confirmed to be an old WWII shell that was approximately six inches in diameter.

“The decision was made to detonate it in situ, where it posed no risk to passing members of public.

The coastguard warned members of the public not to touch suspicious objects found on beaches or in the sea.

They added: “As these items can be so dangerous, if you ever see something suspicious or out of place on the beach or in the sea, do not touch it, move it or take it home.

“Let the experts decide if it is safe.

“Move to a safe space and call 999 and ask for the Coastguard so our teams can investigate.”
