Spotify users claim to have discovered a “genius” hack to avoid the streaming giant’s recent price hike.

Yesterday (24 July), the company increased the price of its ad-free premium service in more than 50 countries.

In the UK, it will rise from £9.99 to £10.99 a month.

But cash-strapped music lovers allege to have found a loophole to avoid paying more, by changing the country they are located in.

Countries like Bangladesh and Nigeria have not seen an increase from the company.

Social media users have praised the hack, which has 3.2 million views and over 41,000 likes.

Twitter user Kamil Choudhury, based in the US, said: “Every time a US company raises its streaming prices on me, I cancel and resubscribe from Bangladesh.

“Today it’s Spotify’s turn; they used to get $12.99 a month from me, but will be getting ~$2.40 a month going forward.”

One Twitter user said: “This is genius. I can’t believe I haven’t been doing this.”

Another added: “Dang, I need to try that for Nigeria.”

Ricardo Cordero added: “Bless up, thank you.”

Raphael Soeiro de Faria said: “Great idea.”

Ryan Badger joked: “This is why everyone thinks these countries have a booming population.”

But others have slammed fellow users.

Another Twitter user said: “This is why we can’t have nice things nor have the benefit of living in a high trust culture. Sad! Many such cases as well. Really no different than shop-lifting.”

Spotify told users yesterday: “The price of Premium Individual is changing from £9.99/month to £10.99/month.

“We’re increasing the price of Premium Individual so that we can continue to invest in and innovate our product offerings and features, and bring you the best experience.

“Since you’re already a Premium subscriber, you will pay £9.99/month until your billing date in August when your subscription will go up to the new price.

“Thanks for being a fan of Premium.

“The Spotify Team.”
