Former F1 star Jody Scheckter is flogging his championship winning Ferrari for £5.5million.

The South African is still the only driver from Africa to even win a race in Formula One’s 74 year history.

But he did more than that, winning the 1979 Driver’s Championship.

He went on to take 10 chequered flags and get 33 podium finishes in his eight year career before retiring in 1980.

Scheckter’s 195mph Ferrari 312 T4, 515bhp car – that he drove nine times in his winning season – is among 12 of his race cars that he is selling.

Collectively the fleet is set to sell for £10.95million when the cars go under the hammer.

Among the others are three McLarens, two Tyrrells and one Wolf F1 car.

The 1973 McLaren M23 is set to go for £1.9million and the 1971 McLaren M19A for £854,000.

The 1975 Tyrrell 007 – £678,000 – the 1977 Wolf WR1 – £650,000 – the 2008 Tyrrell P34 – £555,000 and the 1972 McLaren M21 – £170,000.

They are being sold by Scheckter, now 74, with RM Sotheby’s without reserves.

A spokesperson for the auctioneers said: “RM Sotheby’s is delighted to announce The Jody Scheckter Collection.

“Offered directly from the renowned South African driver and unquestionably one of the most important collections of competition machinery ever offered at auction.

“Scheckter, a Formula One legend, reached the peak of his career in 1979 when, as a Ferrari driver, he secured the World Championship in his Ferrari 312 T4.

“During a period which is unquestionably one of the most dramatic and exciting in the sport’s history.”

They added: “The star of the collection is undoubtedly the 1979 Ferrari 312 T4.

“Enzo Ferrari’s last Formula One Drivers’ World Championship-winning car.

“This chassis was the winner of all three of Scheckter’s victories in 1979, the Belgian, Monaco, and Italian Grands Prix.

“It was also the very first Ferrari Grand Prix car that featured full ground effect and was powered by the legendary three-litre flat-12 engine.

“It was purchased from the factory by Jody Scheckter in November 1982, and remains in entirely original condition.

“Right down to its original seatbelts and numbered components throughout.

“The car has never been driven by anyone other than Jody, and it presents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire a World Championship-winning Ferrari directly from its championship driver.

“In more recent times, Jody memorably demonstrated the car at the 2019 Italian Grand Prix to celebrate the 40th anniversary of his World Championship.

The auction takes place in Monaco on 11 May.
