After a long day as a local anesthesiologist, Dr. Henry Cabrera trades in his white coat for the tranquil surroundings of Lavender Waves Farm. This charming and serene sanctuary, once just a hobby, has blossomed into a thriving business and his beloved home. Farm animals roam freely, attracting visitors from near and far who come to enjoy the outdoor paradise.

Cabrera is a dedicated and innovative agricultural entrepreneur who began a transformative journey when he acquired Lavender Waves Farm in late 2016. His vision was to restore the farm to its former glory while introducing sustainable and modern farming practices.

Perched on 14 acres in South Kingstown, Rhode Island, Lavender Waves Farm is a haven for lavender enthusiasts. The farm boasts over 4,000 perennial lavender plants, each a unique variety, all blooming in harmony around a central gazebo, creating a picturesque scene.

Why lavender?

“I was attracted by its multiple health benefits, including support for low blood pressure and relief from stress and insomnia,” Dr. Cabrera says.

The farm uses the harvested lavender to create various products, including essential oils, lotions, and candles, which they package and sell.

But Lavender Waves Farm is more than just lavender – it’s also home to approximately 100 animals, including rare camels, chickens, guinea hens, ducks, geese, a white peacock, alpacas, and a watchful llama.

“A lot of people ask me what I do with the animals,” says Dr. Henry Cabrera. “And quite frankly, I just love the animals.”

The farm’s animal collection includes friendly and unique breeds, like the Gold-laced Brahma chickens and pilgrim geese, all of which contribute to the farm’s overall charm and character.

Reviving a Piece of Rhode Island’s Agricultural History

The property that Lavender Waves Farm now occupies has a long agricultural history, having previously been known as Gatewood Farm, a producer of bacon and sausage. Over the years, the land was subdivided and sold off, and the farm fell into disrepair.

“The property has long-established agricultural roots,” explains Cabrera. “But farming is a tough business. Eventually, the property was subdivided and sold off to subsidize the farming operations throughout the years.”

When Dr. Henry Cabrera purchased the farm, the process of restoration and improvement began. The dilapidated barn was renovated, and electricity, water systems, and new stables were installed. Rotational grazing pastures were created for the livestock, and a garage was built to house the farm’s equipment and materials.

“When I was figuring out how to design the whole thing,” Cabrera says. “It just occurred to me to put a gazebo in the middle and then have all the rows of lavender meet right in the center. That’s what we did.”

The farm’s unique layout and design have helped create an extraordinary place, not just for the lavender but for the entire visitor experience.

Lavender Waves Farm Events

As the lavender fields of Lavender Waves Farm burst into bloom in June, the farm invites visitors to immerse themselves in the serene beauty and even participate in unique events like lavender yoga. Each Sunday during the summers, guests can partake in yoga classes amidst the fragrant purple waves, finding relaxation and restoration in the heart of the farm.

The peak bloom season at Lavender Waves Farm runs from mid-June through early August, and it’s during this time that the farm opens its doors for the famous “Cut Your Own Lavender” event. Visitors can stroll through the 4,000 lavender plants, cutting their own bundles to take home. Cabrera also offers informative talks about the history of the farm, the different lavender varieties, and proper cutting techniques.

Lavender Waves Farm’s Luxurious, Rustic Retreat

The farm offers a luxuriously rustic one-bedroom farm suite for those looking to immerse themselves in the lavender experience. Perched atop a converted garage, the suite provides guests a direct view of the lavender field.

The suite features unique touches, like amethyst geode sinks in the bathroom, a custom coffee table made from an 80-year-old slab of wood, and an antique wheelbarrow. These rustic elements, combined with the lavender-inspired color scheme, create a cozy and inviting atmosphere for guests.

“I call the farm suite ‘luxuriously rustic,'” Cabrera explains. “I wanted it to be a luxury place yet a rural, rustic place that people could enjoy.”

Henry Cabrera’s Family’s Support

While Cabrera is the driving force behind Lavender Waves Farm, he quickly acknowledges his family’s crucial role in the farm’s success. “This was not something I created on my own,” he says. “To do it, I’ve had to hire people from the very get-go. I’ve had my family here, and the teamwork aspect has been important.”

Cabrera’s parents have been integral to the farm’s operations, relocating from Miami to help get the farm going. The Cabrera family have roots in Cuba where their ancestors also had a farm before leaving because of the Fidel Castro regime.

“I’m sure [farming] is in my blood,” Dr. Cabrera shared on an episode of OnlyGood TV. “My grandfather used to tell me stories about it. I often think ‘where would I be right now?’ if it weren’t for the Castro regime because I would probably be in Cuba, maybe managing some big tobacco plantations.”

However, thanks to the courage and resilience of his family, Dr. Cabrera had the chance to flourish in America and become a doctor and lavender business owner and farmer.

Lavender Waves Farm’s Growth and Success

The growth and success of Lavender Waves Farm have been nothing short of remarkable. What started as a passion project has flourished into a thriving business with a dedicated following and glowing reviews. “The response I’ve received to what I’ve created has exceeded all my expectations,” says Cabrera.

Cabrera’s commitment to creating a unique and welcoming experience for all who visit has paid off, with the farm receiving glowing reviews and a growing number of devoted followers. “What a true joy to visit this gorgeous lavender farm on such a sunny summer day in RI!” exclaims Karen Maze. From the “Cut Your Own Lavender” events to the luxurious farm suite, Lavender Waves Farm has become a must-visit destination for lavender lovers and those seeking a peaceful respite.

“This is one of the most special places I’ve visited in a long time,” says Jodi Cummings, another visitor.

From the knowledgeable and welcoming staff to the stunning natural beauty of the property, Lavender Waves Farm has left a lasting impression on all who have had the pleasure of visiting. Dr. Henry Cabrera remains dedicated to sharing his passion for lavender and providing visitors with a truly unforgettable experience as the farm grows.
