A heartbroken widow has been reunited with her late husband’s ashes after they were stolen from her car.

Retired NHS worker Sharon Harvey had made the three hour, 160 mile drive to scatter them.

Her spouse of 17 years Pete died last November, aged 67.

The 66-year-old, of Norwich chose Whitstable, Kent because the couple used to visit the town once or twice a year together before he died.

But a rucksack containing an urn with Pete’s ashes in it was stolen from her car.

She contacted cops after they were stolen last Wednesday (10 Jul).

Amazingly the cardboard urn was found dumped in a park three days later on Saturday (13 Jul).

Sharon – who travelled down with her aunt – told Need To Know: “The tide was out on Tuesday so we went back to the apartment.

“The following day I discovered my car had been broken into and the hold-all containing Pete’s ashes had been taken from the boot.

“I was going to scatter the ashes the next day.

“I was devastated.”

Sharon – a former NHS administrator – reported the theft in Sea Street, Whitstable to the police.

She branded the thief a “scumbag.”

But luckily the cremation certificate was wrapped around the urn.

The Good Samaritan who found it in the park in Whitstable then contacted the funeral director whose number was on it.

Chuffed Sharron said: “The urn was slightly damp because it was cardboard.

“I can’t believe they’ve been found.”

A Kent Police spokesperson had said on Friday (12 Jul): “Police are appealing to recover a backpack stolen from a car in Whitstable, which is believed to contain a man’s ashes.

“Kent Police was contacted on Wednesday 10 July 2024 following a report that a car had been broken into in Sea Street overnight between Tuesday 9 July and the following day.

“Cash, sunglasses, keys and a backpack were stolen. The backpack, which is described as orange and turquoise, is reported to contain a tube with a woodland scene on it, which contains a man’s ashes.”
