If you’re a first-time driver looking for the right car, it’s worth taking the time to think through your decision before jumping in head first. Practicality is hugely important when making a large purchase like this – you want your investment to pay off, after all. This means focusing on a range of different factors, from reliability to fuel-efficiency. Knowledge is power in these situations, so take the time to understand what it is you’re looking for.

Here’s what you should consider while browsing the second-hand car market as a first-time buyer.

Safety first

When exploring different used cars, ensure they are equipped with modern safety features to provide peace of mind for new drivers. After all, your safety in a second-hand car is even more pressing. This is because cars naturally endure wear and tear over time, plus, newer cars generally have more safety functions.

Some of the essential safety features you’ll need include airbags, anti-lock braking system (ABS) and electronic stability control. Other good features you could look out for include a rearview camera and front and rear parking sensors to minimise the number of accidents while parking.

Budgeting for your first car

Setting a realistic budget for your first car is important. To get a clearer idea of this, you’ll need to acknowledge the total costs involved, as these extend beyond simply buying the vehicle.

Additional costs include ongoing fuel, road tax, insurance, MOTs and services. Plus, you may have to deal with repairs, which can be more costly in cars that require expensive parts.

Although you can’t predict exactly how much you might need to spend on maintenance, you can get an idea of how well a car has been taken care of by looking at the MOT and car service history. This indicates how well the vehicle has been looked after and can highlight problem areas. You can also research how well different car models tend to run by using comparison websites.

Reliable models to consider

Some models and car manufacturers have a great reputation for reliability. It’s worth taking this into account when browsing the second-hand market. Some notably reliable examples include the Ford Focus, Suzuki Swift and Toyota Yaris – these are all deemed to be in the top-ranking models for reliability.

If a car is low maintenance, this means you’ll save more on potential repairs going forward. Meanwhile, cars with complex mechanisms could be prone to more issues.

Fuel efficiency and eco-friendliness

Choosing a fuel-efficient car means your running costs are likely to be lower. Naturally, you won’t need to spend as much on fuel as you perhaps would with other cars. If you’re a young driver with less disposable income to spend, this is an important thing to consider. The reduced environmental harm is another bonus of owning a fuel-efficient car.
