Gail’s — the hugely popular yummy mummy bakery — is preparing to open in one of London’s most gentrified neighbourhoods.

But furious residents have launched a campaign to stop the upmarket chain over fears it poses a threat to family-run businesses.

The petition, set up by a Walthamstow Village stalwart, has attracted 228 supporters so far and is aiming to reach 500.

It comes after plans were announced to open 35 new sites across Britain, as reported by Need To Know.

The organiser, James Harvey, believes that if the chain opens in his quaint high street, local alternatives will be forced to close and the village will lose its character.

He warned: “This could lead to decreased visibility and pedestrian traffic towards independently run businesses, threatening their very existence and dismantling the character and diversity crucial to Walthamstow’s charm.”

James has even gone as far as to research the effects on the economy.

He continued: “Crucially, studies have shown that local businesses recycle a higher share of their revenue back into the local economy, enriching the entire community.

“Preserving Walthamstow’s high street is not just about supporting local businesses; it’s about protecting the unique identity of our community. It’s about choosing inclusive growth, preserving diversity and creating equitable and sustainable local economies.”

He urged people to sign the petition to stop Gail’s from “encroaching upon an iconic space reflective of Walthamstow’s spirit”.

“Let us together safeguard the soul of our beloved neighbourhood,” he added.

Residents have flocked to support the petition.

Demetrius Williams said: “We don’t need a chain in Walthamstow or Waltham Forest.

“We have plenty of independent bakeries in the borough who produce and source high-quality products and great prices.

“Gail’s will be an eyesore to the borough.”

“This will change the balance of the village,” said Arthur Darvill.

“We have independent bakeries and coffee shops.

“Gail’s does not contribute anything new, it will only take away from what we already have.”

“I want the area to retain its independent shops,” added Joanne Bartrum.
