A shop assistant has created a spectacular Spitfire made from 1,500 hand crocheted poppies in memory of her late father.

Crafty Fiona Matthews spent nine months constructing the iconic World War II plane to honour her dad Bob Hooper who served in the RAF.

The 56-year-old put the design on display outside her home to raise money for The Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund.

The charity provides current and former members of the RAF, their partners and families emotional and financial support.

Inventive Fiona taught herself how to crochet with Youtube tutorials.

“It’s a great charity,” Fiona, from Dorchester, Dorset, told Need To Know.

“My dad never had cause to use them but plenty of serving and retired veterans need their help more than ever.

“Every penny is gratefully received and if you’re a tax payer don’t forget gift aid.

“My dad served in the air force in the sixties and seventies and although we never had cause to use it I wanted to give something to them.”

“The Spitfire has been really well received and is a real talking point with people walking past.”

Fiona also wrote a heartfelt poem to go with the display.

So far for the project and has raised £194 out of a target of £500.

And it was warmly received too.

Marie Savage said: “Well done, that plane is amazing we still have a lot of talented people in this country.”

Bill Black added: “Absolutely amazing, well done, take care.”
