A Brit holidaymaker had his leg sliced open and broken in a horror crash with a scooter while he was out jogging.

Fitness fanatic, John McCormack, was out doing an early morning run when a dog dashed out from a doorway.

The pooch tried to bite him and the 60-year-old jumped out of its way but into the path of a passing moped.

It was shattered by the blow which caused a deep muscle laceration and heavy blood loss.

But he also suffered a break to his lower leg.

John, of Broadstairs, Kent, was on holiday in Goa, India, with his wife, Joanne.

He runs Skip2BFit and was on an early morning training run ahead of a 10k event there to raise cash for street kids.

He’s now battling his way back to health after emergency treatment.

John is still in Goa until fit enough to return to Broadstairs, Kent.

He told Need To Know: “I am on the sidelines now, but will be back on track in time.

“I’m not your average Joe, as fitness is my life, and I even have a gym I built in my garden.

“I love inspiring people and my setback is my motivation to come back

“I keep myself ultra fit at 60.

“But I want to keep my leg.

“If it was a simple fibula closed fracture it would take six to eight weeks to recover.

“But mine was much worse with it being an open fracture.

“The surgeon said add at least another month to the recovery time.

“They had to take out the broken bits of bone and reconnect the fibula with a long metal plate and screws.

“The calf muscle was severed too and my artery was damaged.

“I am taking eight tablets a day to stop infection getting into the wound among other things.

“I don’t think I would handle being on one leg with my background.”

He said the pain had been unbearable when the accident happened.

Fortunately, he had good holiday insurance which covered the costs.

But he said there was a surprise during the operation.

“They gave me an epidural and only numbed my lower body, so I was awake when they operated,” he said.

He added the support from his wife, Jo, had been amazing.

Dad-of-four John, founded Skip2BFit in 2002 and has conducted award-winning school skipping workshops with tens of thousands of children.

And despite wanting to get back to it as soon as he can he is staying positive.

“It’s not cold here in Goa.

“And it might have been worse,” he said.

“It could have been a lorry that hit me and I wouldn’t be here now.”
