Fifteen men were arrested at an airport allegedly pretending to be a cricket team.

The group – all dressed in kit – were stopped by border control officers.

When questioned, they presented staff with a letter which claimed that the group were participating in a tournament.

It was scheduled to take place between Friday (21 Mar) and Sunday (23 Mar)

Upon further inspection, it was found that the letter supposedly issued by the Penang Cricket Association, was allegedly forged.

The Bangladeshi men were each detained after arriving at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, in Malaysia, yesterday (18 Mar).

A thorough investigation led by the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (MCBA) found no evidence that any of the men were legitimate cricket players.

According to the MCBA, the group had even sought out sponsorship from a guarantor, as reported by Need To Know.

Their guarantor later admitted to not knowing anything about the alleged sports event, and that they believed the group were merely representing a company.

Authorities suspect that the group were part of a syndicate attempting to misuse sports visas to enter Malaysia for other purposes.

The MCBA have stated that the group will be issued a Not To Land order, and that further action is set to be taken in accordance with immigration regulations.

They also have warned that strict measures will be taken against people or syndicates attempting to abuse sports visas for illegal activities.
