As a result, the stick penetrated his mouth and travelled through to the base of his skull, and reached his brain.

His mother became extremely concerned by his cries and rushed him straight to a hospital.

A CT examination showed that the 12cm long bamboo stick had pierced one of Xiao’s veins.

He was transferred to a Neurosurgery department, where he immediately underwent an operation which saw the stick be successfully removed.

Fortunately, his neurological functions were all intact, as reported by Need To Know.

Guo Shaolei, an associate professor of neurosurgery at the hospital, said that the risk of the complex surgery which Xiao had is extremely high.

Carelessness during the procedure could lead to massive bleeding or irreversible damage to brain tissue.

During the operation, Guo Shaolei operated carefully and avoided important nerves and blood vessels.

There were no complications such as bleeding or an intracranial infection.

Since the incident which occurred on 26 March, Xiao has been discharged and sent back home.

Guo has reminded parents that accidents are very likely to happen when children run or play with sharp objects in their mouths.

He also advised parents to learn basic first aid, so that they could be prepared in the event of an accident in Guangdong, China.
