Electric cars broke out in flames at a charging station.

The blaze started when one EV suffered “heat damage”.

The flames quickly spread and at least two other models were affected by the flames.

Footage showed a dark-coloured car between two white EVs at the charging station.

It burned intensely as thick black smoke billowed into the air and the adjacent cars were set alight.

The blaze took place at Suzhou Industrial Park in the city of Suzhou located west of Shanghai, China, on Saturday evening (24 May).

The fire reportedly affected two Chinese-made NIO cars and an unspecified brand, as reported by Need To Know.

After the video went viral on Chinese social networks, NIO issued a statement explaining that their two models were set alight by the other car that apparently overheated.

The spokesperson said: “At around 5.40pm on 24 May, a NIO ES6 and a NIO ET7 were ignited by a vehicle of another brand that had suffered heat damage while parked at a third-party charging station at the Suzhou Industrial Park.”

After the NIO EVs were ablaze, they automatically issued an alert and company representatives arrived on the scene to deal with the matter.

NIO said they will assist the owners with their insurance claims.

An investigation into the cause of the blaze is ongoing.
