Fishers have been warned after an injured swan was rescued with a large hook stuck in its mouth.

Multiple attempts to help the animal fell through with the bird being in “too much pain” to be helped.

The hook believed to be from a fisher had pierced her tongue which caused “immense” pain.

Three rescuers rushed to the scene to help the frightened swan which refused any help.

Following repeated visits and an aborted rescue after it became too dark to find the bird – two members stepped up to the plate.

The swan was found in the canal near Netherfield Apartments, Milton Keynes, by Lisa.

The member from the MK Swan Rescue, reported the location to the team with rescuer Claire joining the mission.

The latter managed to catch the swan and phone for assistance to get the hook removed.

Once the tackle had been removed the animal was released – she is now thriving and on course for a full recovery.

The rescue took place on Wednesday (29 Oct), as reported by Need To Know.

A spokesperson for MK Swan Rescue said: “We were alerted to a swan on the canal with a large hook embedded in her mouth but, despite the efforts of three rescuers and repeated visits, the frightened swan was in too much pain to allow us to help.

“Begrudgingly, we had to abort our rescue attempts last night as it became too dark and there was no chance of success.

“Today (29 Oct) though, the team stepped up and resumed the search.

“First on the scene was Lisa, who managed to locate the injured swan and report the location, followed by Claire, who managed to catch her and call in the assistance needed to remove the hook, which had gone right through her tongue, causing immense pain and suffering.

“We’re pleased to confirm she’s able to eat and preen properly, so she should make a full recovery.

“Our rescue work depends on your kindness. With your support, we can keep responding whenever swans need us.”
