A dopey crook was nicked within eight minutes of trying to steal £350 worth of booze from a Wetherspoon pub.

Barry Martin was nabbed because he couldn’t wait to crack open one of the bottles.

He attempted to escape with a duffel bag full of bottles of wine, beer and cider.

When cops arrived at the scene an open bottle was found near the point of forced entry.

However, officers caught Martin, 41, red handed after foiling his plan mid-burglary.

Kent Police were phoned at 2.50am on Tuesday (4 Nov), to The Samuel Peto, a Wetherspoons located on Rendezvous Street, Folkestone, Kent

Just eight minutes after the first call came in, Martin was in cuffs on suspicion of burglary, as reported by Need To Know.

A Kent Police spokesperson said: “He was arrested on suspicion of burglary only eight minutes after the first call came in.

“An open bottle of beer was also found close to the point of forced entry, suggesting it may have been opened during or shortly after the break-in.”

The 41-year-old from Risborough Lane, Folkestone was later charged.

On Wednesday (5 Nov) Martin appeared in Folkestone Magistrates Court where he received a six month prison sentence.

He was also recalled to prison as a result and will serve the remainder of a previous sentence.

Insp Pete Woodridge said: “Thanks to the quick and decisive actions of our attending officers and investigation team, we have been able to secure a jail sentence for this opportunistic criminal.

“I’m pleased that a repeat offender has been removed from the Folkestone community.

“Theft not only impacts businesses but the wider public they serve, and we urge business owners to keep reporting incidents to us.”
