A mum-to-be’s trip to the shops took an unexpected turn after her waters broke in Asda.

Millie McCarthy had a supermarket visit she’ll never forget.

What started as a routine day out ended with her baby being born.

Romie became his family’s early Christmas presents after his mother’s water broke inside the supermarket.

The first aider at the Asda store in Liscard, Wirral, Merseyside, thought a colleague was ‘joking’ when she was told what was happening on the shop floor.

Jo Brocklebank and customer service worker Gaynor Swanick tended to the 20-year-old and her mother Kelly McCarthy.

The duo helped look after the mother and daughter before they made their way over to Arrowe Park Hospital, Birkenhead, Merseyside, as reported by Need To Know.

Millie alongside partner and father to their son, Cai Aldred, brought their child back to the store to meet the staff who helped them.

Manda Davidson the store’s community champion presented the parents with a special hamper for Romie.

“At first I just stood there giggling in shock while my mum immediately ran off to find help,” said Millie, from Wallasey, Merseyside.

“She came back with a group of lovely Asda ladies who instantly made me feel calm and cared for.

“One of them grabbed a blanket straight off the shelf, and the others stayed with me, reassuring me and keeping everything as comfortable as possible.

“Their kindness made such a difference in what was a very surprising moment. Later that same day, at 3:43pm, baby Romie was born by emergency C-section.

“After Romie arrived we were kindly invited back into Asda to meet the amazing women who’d helped me that morning.

“They welcomed us with big smiles and even gifted us a sweet little hamper of goodies. The whole experience left me so grateful.

“The staff at Asda Liscard are always happy and friendly – and on that day, they truly went above and beyond.”

Kelly, 40, said: “They showed such care and kindness.

“They were incredibly quick to respond – they were proactive, friendly, and reassuring throughout the whole situation.

“They offered first aid, a chair, and did everything possible to make sure both my daughter and I were comfortable and calm.

“Their genuine concern and professionalism truly put our minds at ease during a very unexpected moment.

“Their compassion and quick thinking made a world of difference to us that day, and we’ll always be thankful for their kindness.”

Jo, who works on chilled produce, said: “A colleague came up to me and said a customer’s waters had broken by the teacups and I thought it was a joke at first as that colleague is always joking around.

“I really didn’t believe her but I thought I’d better check just in case.

“I then saw Millie, who was in the same class together as my son Ben in primary school, and she was in shock, but I said for her ‘not to worry.’

“I think her mum was in a bit of shock too. We just got some towels and kept them calm.

“It was lovely seeing them all when they came back in the store. Romie is absolutely beautiful and Millie looked so well.

“I think coming to Asda was the baby’s first big day out.”

Romie was born on 19 October.
