Passengers on a bus were left terrified after watching windows smashed in when the driver hit a wall.

Footage showed the vehicle slowly scrape along the granite stones and glass shattering onto seats.

The bus had mounted the pavement to avoid a parked car.

The incident happened in St Peter Port, Guernsey.

Lena Collinson was on the number 81 service at the time.

“It could have been nasty if we had been sat in the seats,” she told Need To Know.

“It wasn’t the driver’s fault.

“The bus was sent on a completely inappropriate diversion to avoid roadworks.

“It scraped along the wall trying to avoid a parked car and was badly damaged on the left side.

“Passengers switched seats because they saw it could happen.

“So thankfully nobody was injured.”

The incident took place on Monday 26 January.

Bus operator Stagecoach said three windows were damaged on the bus in the St Stephen’s Hill area of St Peter Port.

The company also said it is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident as part of an internal investigation.
