A family-of-four was killed by carbon monoxide poisoning in their new home.

The horror began on Wednesday (4 Feb) evening when 22-year-old Hajdar Kola called emergency services.

“My sister’s not well,” he said frantically.

“We don’t know what’s wrong with her.”

Xhesika, 15, was slumped on her bed, unconscious.

Their parents Arti and Jonida, both 48, were also in the room.

During the call, the operator reportedly heard the parents faint.

Hajdar then managed to give an address before collapsing himself.

Tragically, he gave the street number as 168 instead of 186, possibly because he was dazed.

Although the ambulance arrived only about 300m from the family home, it took responders some time to locate the correct property.

While searching, they contacted Arti’s brother, Durim, as reported by Need To Know.

Finally, almost two hours after Hajdar’s call, police entered the family home in Porcari, in Italy’s Tuscany region, accompanied by Durim and two neighbours.

On the ground floor, the table was still set, as if the family had just finished dinner.

Shortly after discovering the family in Xhesika’s bedroom on the first floor, everyone began to feel unwell and had to leave the house.

They were later taken to A&E with dizziness and breathing difficulties.

Durim was the worst affected, having fainted and hit his head.

He spent the night in hospital and returned home yesterday (5 Feb).

The siblings’ grandmother also fainted when she received the news.

Ernest, the neighbour who entered with his father, recalled: “I checked their pulse and they were still alive – at least the boy and the father – they even tried to open their eyes.

“We tried to wake them and revive them, but then the uncle fainted and we and the carabinieri started feeling dizzy.

“At that point we left the house and waited for the fire brigade. Then we saw them bringing the bodies out.”

Arti arrived in Italy from Greece around 10 years ago and later brought his Albanian family with him. He worked as a painter and decorator, while Hajdar was an electrician.

They had moved into the house five months ago after buying it and were still carrying out renovations.

It has been confirmed that they died from a carbon monoxide leak from the new boiler.
Investigators will now determine whether the leak was caused by an installation or maintenance issue, and who carried out the work.

Xhesika’s aunt, Mira, said she “wanted to become a hairdresser, just like a cousin who lives in Padua”.

Her headteacher, Gioia Giulianni, described her as “a girl full of life, as 15-year-olds are, and intellectually lively”.

A cousin, also called Durim, said of Hajdar: “He was an incredibly kind young man and a hard worker. We spoke often, and his only goal was to help his family and his parents.”

A neighbour said of Arti: “He was a good man, always looking out for others.”

And a local shop owner described Jonida as “a very kind person. Never a harsh word, always a smile for everyone.”
