The footballer was rushed to hospital for emergency care at around 8.30pm.
The 29-year-old striker tragically lost his life shortly afterwards.
Lucas was killed in the suburb of Rafael Castillo in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires.
After his death was confirmed by the President Néstor Kirchner Hospital, the police launched a manhunt to find the suspect.
The authorities suspect that he was fatally wounded by one of his brothers, who both have criminal records.
The police are reviewing CCTV images in the area, which reportedly filmed the whole sequence of events.
Lucas spent a spell playing in the Argentine second division with the Buenos Aires team Club Almirante Brown, as reported by Need To Know.
He then continued his career in the lower leagues.
His former club said in a statement: “Club Almirante Brown regrets the passing of Lucas Pires, a former player of our club.
“We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this time of grief.”
A former teammate added: “My deepest condolences to the family.
“I was lucky enough to play with him in the youth leagues, and it was wonderful to watch him play.
“A handsome young man who took care of the ball like no other.
“Rest in peace, Luquitas.”
His brother Omar Pires and several cousins also played for Almirante Brown.
The police investigation into Lucas’ death is ongoing.
