Rescuers scrambled to reach a woman surrounded by the sea on a tiny rock after getting cut off by the tide.

Locals raised the alarm after spotting her relaxing on a chair.

Coastguard teams and two lifeboats rushed to the scene at Nanjizal, near Penzance, Cornwall.

Rescuers tried to the woman stranded on rocks at the south end of the cove.

But with the tide ebbing, crews decided the safest option was to remain on scene and wait.

Sea conditions were assessed as unfavourable, meaning an extraction by sea was put on hold.

The lifeboat remained offshore to provide safety cover while the casualty waited for the tide to drop enough to make their way back to steps leading out of the cove, as reported by Need To Know.

A Lands End Coastguard Search and Rescue Team spokesperson said: “We were called to assist St Ives and Penzance Coastguard Rescue Team with the extraction of a casualty in a difficult spot on the north coast of the peninsula.

“The sea conditions were assessed as unfavourable by the lifeboat, so an extraction by sea was put on hold.

“We requested the lifeboat to remain there for ours and the casualty’s safety until the tide dropped enough for them to recover themselves back to the steps up from the cove.”

Locals were impressed by the rescuers’ response.

But not with the woman.

One said: “Thank you all.

“Sadly social media has brought this place to the attention of far too many people.”

Another said: “I agree.

“It was always somewhere special for locals to go but like a lot of places now spoilt by social media telling everyone.”

While a third added: “Thanks to all for the great job you do.”
