A food blogger and mum who previously made headlines thanks to her genius food storage hacks has impressed her followers once again – this time with a way to keep asparagus fresh for over a month.
Amy Lynn Cross, 45, from Washington, US, shares her simple tips with her 88,000 followers on Instagram (@thecrosslegacy) and on her blog, The Cross Legacy.
Her most recent hack shows the best way to store asparagus in the fridge to maximise how long it can stay fresh.
The trick involves just two simple steps.
Amy starts by snapping the end of each asparagus stalk before placing them in a container filled with water.
Then, she simply places the container in the fridge with the tops of the stalks exposed.
Amy swears by the trick and says it has kept her asparagus fresh for well over a month – with her current batch purchased and stored on 1 February still going strong six weeks later.
She usually trims the end of the asparagus around the two-week mark, but otherwise leaves them be.
She shared a video of her showing the method on Instagram with a few top tips.
Amy said: “Use filtered water – whatever water you normally would want to drink because it [the asparagus stems] sucks it up and takes on the taste of that water, so if you’re using water that has chlorine in it, your asparagus will taste like chlorine.”
The post racked up more than 1,100 likes.
One follower said: “I can’t believe your asparagus last that long! That’s amazing!”
“Gosh… so smart about the water!” agreed another fan.
Someone else commented: “This is a great idea, especially with how expensive asparagus usually is. If I see a good sale, now I know I can get extra!!!”
“Awesome tip,” added another user.
Another viewer said: “Love this tip so much! Thank you for sharing!”
“I do this and it works amazing,” another follower confirmed.
