The accident happened shortly after take-off yesterday (2 Jan) morning. Harrowing footage shows how the copter plunges from the sky and lands with a huge splash in the water. Horrified onlookers rushed over after hearing the crash. Passengers Júlia Mendonça Silva Bernardes and Leonardo Resende Silva Vitorino were rescued. Júlia, 22, is a medical student and Leonardo, 27, is a business administrator. The pilot, Lucas Chaves Ávila, sustained suspected spinal fractures. They were taken from the scene at Furnas Lake in Capitólio, Brazil, to hospitals in nearby Passos and Piumhi. None of the survivors are in critical conditions. But divers eventually found the body of passenger Vanilton Alves Balieiro in the early afternoon. He will be laid to rest in Capitólio today (3 Jan). According to the police, Vanilton, 44, died after becoming trapped by his seatbelt as the chartered flight crashed. Work to remove the helicopter, which is 12m (39 ft) under water will be carried out today (3 Jan). According to Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency, the aircraft was made in 2009 and its airworthiness certificate was valid until October 2024. The chilling moment a helicopter crashed into a lake, killing one person on board, was captured on CCTV.

The accident happened shortly after take-off yesterday (2 Jan) morning.

Horrified onlookers rushed over after hearing the crash.

Passengers Júlia Mendonça Silva Bernardes and Leonardo Resende Silva Vitorino were rescued.

Júlia, 22, is a medical student and Leonardo, 27, is a business administrator.
