Three female friends – including two cousins – have been killed in a horror crash on a motorway.

Their VW Gol hatchback flipped over on a bend and rolled several times.

Lowrrana Cássia de Bessa Freitas, 22, died along with Letícia Hellen de Freitas Soares and Maria Vitória Bezerra Cesário, both 20.

Letícia and Maria Vitória were cousins and killed at the scene.

Lowrrana died shortly after arriving at hospital.

The accident took place on the CE-138 motorway in Ceará, north east of Brasilia, Brazil, at around 10pm on Sunday (21 Jan)

The young women were travelling from their home city of São Miguel to the town of Pereiro, when tragedy struck.

Despite crossing state lines, the journey is only around 14 miles (22.5km).

The police said the driver “possibly lost control on a bend”, causing the car to flip over several times.

Other road users tried to help the victims in the wreckage and called the emergency services for assistance.

A police spokesperson said: “After arriving at the scene, the team came across a VW Gol car with Rio Grande do Norte license plates, overturned and off the road, with two deceased victims inside.

“At the time, one of the passengers was taken to hospital, but could not resist her injuries.

“The driver was 20 years old and the passengers were 20 and 22 years old.”

Letícia and Maria Vitória’s heartbroken grandmother said: “Rest in peace, my granddaughters, may God keep you in a good place.

“Know that grandma loves you forever.”

Following the tragedy, the city of São Miguel declared an official mourning period of three days.

A police investigation into the accident is ongoing.
