Social media users have been left shocked after a Scottish family shared the moment a shark viciously attacked a turtle right in front of them.

Ruth Gaw, along with her husband Derek and kids Arran and Chloe, decided to spend the day exploring Monkey Mia beach on the Western coast of Australia, following their recent move from Perth, Scotland.

Looking for a good spot to snorkel and fish, the family were stopped in their tracks when they witnessed a tiger shark bolt for a turtle.

Capturing the terrifying moment on video, Ruth shared the clip to Facebook (@ruthyroo ), where it garnered over 154,000 views.

“It was around a 2.5m tiger shark,” Ruth told NeedToKnow.co.uk.

“It was incredible to see such a big shark come in so fast close to shore.

“We were just left speechless with what we just witnessed.

“My heart was racing.

“But luckily, the turtle got away.”

In the clip, a tiger shark can be seen casually swimming towards the shore before it bolts to the right.

Luckily the turtle swam away fast enough, escaping the shark’s jaws.

The shark then thrashes in the water, before giving up and swimming away.

Ruth captioned the post: “Close encounter,” which has so far gained over 1.5k shares and hundreds of comments.

Narelle said: “No way! That’s insane.”

Linda added: “Bit close for comfort, that’s all I’m saying.”

“Oh my goodness, that was close!” said Patricia.
